Writing TV Scripts
Writing TV Scripts
When you start writing scripts for television in the UK, you should be aware that you do have to break into the business and get noticed before you can consider yourself a scriptwriter. It is highly unlikely that a TV studio will pick up your script at the very first time you submit it. You do have to start at the bottom, take things slowly and gradually work your way up. There will be disappointments, but you can’t let these keep you down. You do have to keep trying.
You should start off in other avenues before you even consider TV shows. Some places where many scriptwriters did get their start include writing short stories and plays for magazines, writing a radio play and have it performed on the radio, and writing and producing stage plays for school and college groups as well as community theatre groups. Attend workshops sponsored by TV stations or by writers of popular TV shows to help you get tips of how to get your career started. These activities will help you learn the nuts and bolts of the business, such as how to lay out the script correctly on the pages and how to put your own productions together.
First you have to think about getting your work published. Many scriptwriters have been discovered in this way when a producer reads a piece he/she is really interested in making into a television show. When you have publications to back you up, then you have excellent resources to place on your resume. Some of your initial work may be for non-profit agencies and although you won’t receive any pay, you will gain valuable experience.
When you have an amateur production of a script that you wrote, you will have your first break. You do have to realize that many years may pass and you may have several amateur productions before you get your first professional production. This means that you will need another job from which you earn an income. Starting out in a writing career as a scriptwriter for television in the UK will be like a hobby or special interest until you get a call from a producer that the TV studio is interested in producing your work.
